Seton Hall’s Ed.S. in Professional Counseling program is offered entirely online and serves as the capstone for the College’s M.A. in Counseling or School Counseling programs, providing students with skills and models of intervention necessary for licensure as a professional counselor.
The Ed.S. in Professional Counseling program consists of an additional 12 credits of advanced-level practice and knowledge courses beyond the 48-credit M.A. in Counseling program. The program helps fulfill the 60-credit requirement for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey and aligns with standards in most states. Students gain deeper skills in clinical practice, crisis intervention, and advocacy through immersive coursework and extensive in-field training.

Admissions Requirements
Applicants must have completed the M.A. in Counseling or M.A. in School Counseling requirements from Seton Hall University. The Ed.S. program accepts candidates on a rolling basis who wish to pursue professional licensure and advanced clinical practice.

Curriculum Overview
The online Ed.S. in Professional Counseling program adds 12 advanced credits to Seton Hall's M.A. in Counseling or School Counseling degree to meet licensure requirements and deepen clinical expertise through coursework and field-based experiences.
This program offers intensive training in individual and group counseling, advanced diagnosis and treatment planning, clinical supervision, and community-based advocacy. Students must complete three semesters of supervised internship (300 hours per semester, including 120 direct hours). A capstone project or equivalent is required. The program includes two weekend residencies to promote professional connection and mentorship.

Graduates of the Ed.S. in Professional Counseling program are well-positioned to meet the academic requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey and many other states.
Designed as a post-master’s credential, the Ed.S. provides the final 12 credits needed to fulfill the 60-credit requirement for licensure and builds upon the foundational skills gained in the M.A. in Counseling/School Counseling programs.
This advanced training prepares graduates for clinical roles in private practice, hospitals, counseling centers, nonprofit agencies, and community-based mental health organizations. Professionals may serve as licensed mental health counselors, clinical supervisors, crisis intervention specialists, or program directors—delivering client-centered care across diverse populations and settings.
Coursework focuses on deepening expertise in individual and group counseling, diagnosis and treatment planning, supervision models, and trauma-informed care. Students complete a rigorous internship experience and capstone project that strengthen clinical decision-making, cultural competence, and ethical leadership in practice.
Graduates are empowered to respond to increasing mental health needs and to serve as advocates for equitable access to services, particularly among underserved communities. With practical experience, theoretical grounding, and substantial in-field training, they are prepared to advance both professionally and personally as impactful counseling leaders.
