Philosophers Speak: Professor Haufe on the Humanities

The Department of Philosophy and the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences will host the next speaker in the Philosophers Speak lecture series from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, in Bethany Hall BC. This lecture brings to campus Chris Haufe, Ph.D., professor of Philosophy at Case Western Reserve University.

Professor Haufe’s talk is titled, “How the Humanities Help us with Life’s Questions.” In this talk, he will consider the contributions the Humanities make towards answering questions about what matters to us. In doing this, he will also highlight various parallels with the pursuit of knowledge in the natural sciences.

Professor Haufe received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York. He is the Elizabeth M. and William C. Treuhaft Professor at Case Western. His interests are in science, logic, mathematics and literature. His recent books include, How Knowledge Grows: The Evolutionary Development of Scientific Practice (2022, MIT Press), Do the Humanities Create Knowledge? (2023, Cambridge University Press), and Fruitfulness: Science, Metaphor, and the Puzzle of Promise (2024, Oxford University Press), among other works.
