Expanding Boundaries: Seton Hall Welcomes New International Students and Opportunities
Tuesday, January 28, 2025
Seton Hall University proudly continues to strengthen its global footprint with a series of exciting internationalization initiatives this Spring 2025 semester. Starting with a warm welcome to our new international students during International Orientation in January, the University is committed to fostering a vibrant, diverse and inclusive campus community as well as extending opportunities for Seton Hall students, faculty and administrators around the globe.
“These programs and initiatives underscore our belief that global engagement enriches the academic experience for everyone at Seton Hall,” said Johanna Pan-Carr, director of International Student Services. “We are thrilled to welcome new international students and exchange students this semester, who bring their unique perspectives and enrich our campus community. Thank you to our campus partners from the Career Center, Health Services, CAPS and Public Safety for sharing the campus resources available to help students succeed both academically and personally.”
These new students hail from various parts of the world and are enrolled in a wide range of academic programs, including undergraduate, master’s and doctoral studies. The cohort also includes exchange students from our esteemed partner universities, such as University of Westminster in London, where four Seton Hall students will study abroad this spring. The University is also pleased that the Bergen Record featured our annual international Thanksgiving program, in which Seton Hall colleagues host international students to experience a traditional Thanksgiving experience. Seton Hall is also welcoming back our Fall exchange students, including three Buccino Leadership Institute students who enriched their global perspectives last fall by spending the Fall semester in Ireland and Spain. Gabriella Fernandez, Jacob Walker and Colin Little took advantage of Seton Hall’s partner universities and global opportunities for transformative learning, leadership and professional experiences.
Colin Little shared, "I encourage everyone to try and do a Study Abroad experience at Seton Hall! I had the opportunity to meet so many new people, learn about other cultures and expand my horizons at the Dublin Institute of Technology. I traveled to places that I might not have been able to without going abroad. It was a really transformative semester."
Adding to this vibrant international community is our newest Fulbright Scholar, Mario Milazzo, Ph.D., from Italy. Milazzo will conduct groundbreaking research in physics, teach, and mentor students in their own research endeavors.
“I am honored to join Seton Hall as a Fulbright Scholar,” said Milazzo. “I look forward to contributing to the innovative research community here while mentoring students to develop their scientific inquiry and global perspectives.”
Looking ahead, Seton Hall will host a distinguished delegation of university leaders from India in April, alongside several other New Jersey colleges. This visit is part of a broader effort to deepen partnerships, explore new opportunities for collaboration in higher education and continue to build the pipeline of talented students from across the globe.
The University is also enhancing its study abroad offerings, with an expansion of available semester- or year-long exchange program destinations starting in the Fall 2025 semester. This spring and summer terms, Seton Hall is proud to launch its largest-ever slate of Faculty-Led Programs (FLPs), making it one of the most robust FLP offerings in the state.
“At Seton Hall, international education is rooted in our very foundation, through Mother Seton’s 1803 journey to Italy and the European travels of Bishop Bayley in 1842. Without these pivotal international experiences by our namesake and founder, our University would not exist,” said Douglas Cantelmo, director of Study Abroad and Global Engagement. “Today, we are fully realizing these global foundations, and we are thrilled to see a record number of students participating in faculty-led abroad programs! Study abroad is one of the most transformative experiences a student can have during their Seton Hall journey, and we are committed to making these opportunities accessible to every student, regardless of their academic program or background.”
Programs like Doing Business in India, Faith and Nursing in Mexico, International Psychology in Serbia, Italy in the Footsteps of the Saints and Vive le Sport in France offer a range of unique, globally focused learning experiences. Additionally, summer programs such as Summer in Liverpool, Celtic Chronicles in Ireland and Lyon Language and Immersion in France are now welcoming applications, inviting students to embark on an unforgettable international adventure.
A recent event that helped to bring this spirit of internationalization to life is a Global Gala that was hosted by the International Student Organization (ISA), an active student organization that provides many opportunities for cross-cultural engagement on campus. The Gala also raised funds for the organization Doctors Without Borders, a global organization that provides medical aid to people in need.
Seton Hall’s commitment to internationalization continues to grow, ensuring students and faculty alike have access to diverse perspectives and transformative global opportunities. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on another remarkable semester of global engagement.
