Telling Our Stories Initiative Continues Following Debut Event

speaker in front of an audienceThe Global Learning Center, in collaboration with Educational Studies, hosted the inaugural event of the Telling Our Stories initiative on November 25, 2024. The event featured a compelling presentation by history major Benny Duran and invited attendees to engage in a meaningful conversation about family heritage, resilience, and the formative power of personal narratives.

Duran shared his family’s journey from the Dominican Republic to the United States, offering insight into the sacrifices made by his parents and grandparents to provide greater opportunities for future generations. Through his story, he emphasized perseverance, cultural identity and the values passed down through immigrant families. The discussion encouraged attendees to reflect on their experiences and recognize the commonalities connecting diverse backgrounds.

The Telling Our Stories initiative hosts sessions where volunteer speakers share personal narratives for 20–30 minutes, followed by audience Q&A. The project explores diverse topics, including cultural identity, global perspectives on disability, gender roles, education, war, peace and more.

Potential speakers are encouraged to reflect on their unique journeys as international or first-generation college students, nontraditional learners, or individuals shaped by pivotal life experiences. The series welcomes a wide range of stories, fostering meaningful dialogue and deeper connections across the community.

Jessica Wilson of the Global Learning Center highlighted the significance of the series, stating, “Sharing our stories not only reveals the experiences that have shaped us but also encourages others to reflect on their own paths. The initiative seeks to expand our ability to connect with others by acknowledging that we don’t always know what someone else has been through.”

As the initiative progresses, Seton Hall encourages more students and community members to participate. James Daly, Ed.D., co-leads the project, guiding its development and outreach with Wilson.

The Global Learning Center is planning talks for the spring semester as the Telling Our Stories series continues to invite new voices. Those interested in sharing their stories are encouraged to visit the Global Learning Center’s website for more information on how to get involved.
